How to Install a 20m COB LED Strip Light (DC 24V)
Installing a COB LED strip 20m is a smart and energy-efficient way to create uniform, professional lighting for architectural, commercial, and decorative projects. This guide is designed to walk contractors, lighting professionals, and importers through the complete process of a 20m LED strip installation, ensuring high performance, safety, and long-term reliability.
1. Plan Before You Install
Before starting your 20m LED strip cob installation, begin by measuring the area and planning the lighting layout. Make sure you have a clean, dry surface for mounting. Decide whether the strip will be used in a straight line, curved layout, or around corners.
Calculate the total wattage (for example, 14W/m × 20m = 280W) and ensure your DC 24V LED strip light driver can handle at least 20% more than the required load — typically around 320–350W.
For RGB installations, you’ll also need a compatible controller. If the strip is being segmented, take note of the cutting points (marked on the strip) and whether additional connectors, solder joints, or amplifiers are needed. Planning your injection points is also critical to avoid voltage drop across long distances.
2. Preparing the COB LED Strip 20M
Once your materials and layout are ready, carefully unroll the COB LED strip 20m. Avoid powering the strip while it is rolled up, as this can cause overheating or damage. Before permanent installation, it’s advisable to pre-test the strip with the power supply to confirm uniform brightness and functionality.
Clean the installation surface thoroughly. If you’re using the built-in adhesive backing, ensure that it sticks firmly to the surface. For high-heat areas or professional finishes, consider installing the strip inside aluminum channels with diffuser covers, which help manage heat and offer added protection for long-term use.
3. Mounting and Connection Process
To begin installation, either peel the adhesive backing and stick the strip directly to the surface, or slide it into the prepared aluminum profile and secure with mounting clips. The profile method is preferred for most professional-grade 20m strip light applications, especially in visible or high-use environments.
Next, connect the strip to the power supply. A DC 24V LED strip light will require attention to polarity—connect the positive and negative wires accurately. For single-color strips, this is a straightforward two-wire connection. For RGB variants, connect the strip to a 4-pin RGB controller, which then links to the driver. Be sure to use correct gauge wiring (typically 18 AWG or thicker) to prevent voltage drop, especially over long runs.
4. Managing Long Runs and Voltage Drop
When installing a full-length 20m LED strip cob, you must account for voltage drop to maintain consistent brightness. This can be done by injecting power at both ends of the strip or at strategic intervals — every 5 to 10 meters — depending on the wattage and the cable type used.
If you’re installing an RGB COB LED strip 20m, LED signal amplifiers should be added after every 10 meters to maintain synchronized color and brightness. This ensures your entire lighting system works efficiently without dimming or flickering at the far end of the strip.
5. Final Testing and Troubleshooting
Once everything is in place, turn on the system and perform a full test. Check for uniform brightness along the entire length of the strip. Use a multimeter to verify voltage consistency, especially at the end of the run. Confirm that your dimmer or controller is working correctly and that there are no visible signs of overheating, connection instability, or flicker.
Finally, secure all wiring and connectors neatly using clips or trunking. This protects the system from future damage and makes any future maintenance easier.
