One of the main features of a sports facility is the quality of the lighting system. It is necessary that the lights are performing to the point of allowing the right lighting during an event. In fact, in the absence of correct lighting, it would be very difficult if not impossible for the sportsmen and the referee to play the match; while the public, of course, would not be able to enjoy the show. Another fundamental element is related to safety: the lighting system of a football field, in fact, must be safe and easy to manage. Therefore, maintenance must not be neglected, which must be performed regularly and efficiently. Nowadays, sustainability is undoubtedly one of the topics that most interests the population and in the case of public works, even the administrations and the clients of the works aim at a decrease in energy consumption. To achieve this goal, two paths can be followed: the use of energy from renewable sources and the use of low-consumption technologies that exploit the fewest possible resources, returning the best results.
In the sports sector, in places such as stadiums, sports halls, car circuits, a large consumption of electricity is used annually.
Often in this sector the systems are equipped with oversized lighting systems mainly due to the type of lamps used, technologically outdated and unable to optimize the light produced, thus significantly affecting the creation of “light pollution”.

Directionality and uniformity of light are important elements. The uniformity of lighting must be calculated based on the ratio between the maximum and minimum values of brightness. Based on the values of the uniformity and the horizontal direction, soccer fields are classified in three different classes:
Class I: Lowest standard class. It is used for training and recreation use and high school football grounds. Values required are 200 lux horizontal illumination and 0.5 uniformity.
Class II: Used in some leagues and semi-professional stadiums. Values required are approximately 500 lux horizontal illuminance and 0.6 uniformity.
Class III: For national and international professional games. Values required are about 750 lux horizontal illuminance and 0.7 uniformity.

g1 is the overall Uniformity. A good uniformity of lighting is important both for the values relating to the horizontal planes and for those relating to the vertical planes. If the uniformity is not adequate, there is a risk of not being able to distinguish the athletes in some areas of the area used for sporting activities and in the specific case of football, not to distinguish the ball. Uniformity is expressed as the ratio between the minimum and medium illuminance values (Emin / E).
