One of the main features of a sports facility is the quality of the lighting system. It is necessary that the lights are performing to the point of allowing the right lighting during an event. In fact, in the absence of correct lighting, it would be very difficult if not impossible for the sportsmen and the referee to play the match; while the public, of course, would not be able to enjoy the show. Both the participants and the public must be enabled to clearly see the playing field and the surrounding areas.

Another fundamental element is related to safety: the lighting system of a football field, in fact, must be safe and easy to manage. Therefore, maintenance must not be neglected, which must be performed regularly and efficiently. The operators who deal with it must be enabled to easily access the various lighting structures inside the football field, but also the controls and lamp towers for the maintenance of the projectors.

Nowadays, sustainability is undoubtedly one of the topics that most interests the population and in the case of public works, even the administrations and the clients of the works aim at a decrease in energy consumption. To achieve this goal, two paths can be followed: the use of energy from renewable sources and the use of low-consumption technologies that exploit the fewest possible resources, returning the best results.

In the sports sector, in places such as stadiums, sports halls, car circuits, a large consumption of electricity is used annually.

Often in this sector the systems are equipped with oversized lighting systems mainly due to the type of lamps used, technologically outdated and unable to optimize the light produced, thus significantly affecting the creation of “light pollution”.

LED technology is the best solution for these types of problems, with the same lighting, with it, it is in fact possible to obtain energy savings ranging from 50 to 80%.

To meet all these demands, VST, a LED flood light manufacture in China, is committed to building highly efficient products.

Recently, a new series of products suitable for lighting sports facilities was launched on the market by VST. The products from the so-called LED Flood Light Series are technologically designed and built to equip sports halls, soccer fields, tennis courts, gyms, swimming pools, athletics tracks, stadiums, and any other place related to sport.

VST, in addition to being an LED light manufacturer, with over 10 years of experience, also provides a lighting design service. In a first project for the lighting of a playground, purely used for football, measuring 60×40 meters, in which one of the new products of the Flood Lights line was used, the presentation and the lighting design were carried out with Dialux.

The team of VST, after a thorough study of the project, and after noting the customer’s requests, opted for the use of the 200W LED Flood Light.

Some reasons why this conclusion has been reached are to be found in the characteristics of this product entirely manufactured in China.

First, the lumen efficiency which is ~142.3 as seen in the data sheet and confirmed from the Luminaire Photometric Test Report.

This value compared to ordinary 80~90lm/w, shows a clearly saving in terms of energy.

Other reasons are that this LED Flood Light is Eco-friendly, conforming to the law of environmental protection and carbon reduction plan, so no Light pollution and it has a lifespan of over 30000 hours, in other words no replacement and maintenance in 6 years.

The other reasons, justified by the study, are of a purely technical nature. The factors considered for the lighting of a football field are different:

  • directionality and uniformity of light
  • limitation of glare
  • colour

Directionality and uniformity of light are important elements. The uniformity of lighting must be calculated based on the ratio between the maximum and minimum values of brightness. Based on the values of the uniformity and the horizontal direction, soccer fields are classified in three different classes:

Class I: Lowest standard class. It is used for training and recreation use and high school football grounds. Values required are 200 lux horizontal illumination and 0.5 uniformity.

Class II: Used in some leagues and semi-professional stadiums. Values required are approximately 500 lux horizontal illuminance and 0.6 uniformity.

Class III: For national and international professional games. Values required are about 750 lux horizontal illuminance and 0.7 uniformity.

After a careful study, we can see below the values obtained with Dialux and the graphic representation of the project.

As we can see, the Horizontal illuminance, which is the illuminance at ground level of the area where sports activities are carried out, has a minimum value of 275 Lux which is more than the 200 required.

g1 is the overall Uniformity. A good uniformity of lighting is important both for the values relating to the horizontal planes and for those relating to the vertical planes. If the uniformity is not adequate, there is a risk of not being able to distinguish the athletes in some areas of the area used for sporting activities and in the specific case of football, not to distinguish the ball. Uniformity is expressed as the ratio between the minimum and medium illuminance values (Emin / E). In this case, its value is 0.55 which is more than the 0.50 required for this class of soccer fields.
