Since these are complex structures, divided into different areas for characteristics and use, the designer must be able to interpret these surfaces, identifying the best performing lighting bodies for each of them, in order to provide excellent lighting and, at the same time, minimize energy consumption.
The light must be used as a marketing tool.
In fact, it is not always and only the price that influences the customer’s choice but also the image and style of how the products are represented.
The shopping experience should not be underestimated.
The light should orient and guide the customer through all areas of the supermarket and these must be set up in the best possible way to increase the pleasure of buying and the success of sales.
In addition to this factor, the light should bring out the freshness and color sof the products.
With well-maintained lighting, different environments can be created thanks to the different colors, intensities, and contrasts.
LED tube lights are adaptable to all areas of the supermarket.
The absence of UV components preserves food products while the little heat dissipation eliminates unnecessary waste of energy to cool the products in the fridge.
The most important part of supermarkets are the goods placed on the shelves, arranged in continuous and linear rows.
Here the arrangement of the LED tube light will be parallel to the aisles to enhance the goods with the correct distribution of the luminous flux.
Here we will use the LED T8 Tube with a color temperature of 4000K and a power capable of guaranteeing a minimum illumination of 600 LUX.

A very important space for the supermarket is parking.
Customers must immediately find a welcoming and clearly visible environment upon arrival and above all, once the purchases are finished, returning to the car they must have the right lighting to arrange the shopping bags.

In car parks, which can be both internal and external, it is ideal to use a product that has an adequate IP.
In this case, we are going to use 18W 4ft T8 LED Tube and 2x4ft T8 Light Fixtures, tri-proof light fixtures, which means IP65 water/vapor proof, dustproof, and corrosion-proof.
It can work with LED T8 tubes.
On top of this, the T8 LED tube with 5500k color temperature is ideal because this temperature reproduces the natural light of the day.
The average LUX level in a parking area is 75.
Through the lighting calculations done by Dialux we can determine the exact number of products to use.
In our case with a parking dimensions of 90×9.5 meters we are going to use 15pcs VST-TF-2x1200L including 2xT8 tube 5500k.

LED tube lights 4 ft 18W feature a 120° light beam, great for lighting large spaces of a supermarket of this size. Considering the internal heights of 3 meters, we know that such a light beam will cover a circumference of about 9 meters.
As we can see from the following lighting distribution.

But as mentioned earlier, the color temperature of the lights is the key factor, and it depends on the product to be highlighted or on the area of the store such as:

For all those applications we can still use the lighting fixture VST-T8-1200-18W but with a different color temperature.
It is important to use 6000K light for frozen foods, the fish and fruit department, and to have illuminance values between 800 and 1000 lux in the refrigerated counters.
3000K light to illuminate the cheese counters, the warm color of the 3000k light allows you to enhance the yellow of the cheese and thus highlight its characteristics, bakery, and oven products.
3000k light also for the wine cellar.
In the case of cosmetic products or clothing, it is useful to highlight them with color temperatures of 5000 K and with strong lighting that comes from inside the shelves.
Another very important area for the supermarket is the storage/warehouse.
Here we can use a LED tube light with a color temperature of 6000k.
Also, we find this product ideal for this space because the storage and working humidity range for the VST-T8-1200-18W is 10%-90% and is appropriate for most climatic zones.
Considering our case study of a supermarket of 3 meters high ceiling and 90×40 meters dimensions, we have a storage area of 16×8 meters (see yellow area on the left).
Here, we are going to use a quantity of 6×2 LED Light Tube manufactured in China by VST to reach the target of 300LUX required in a warehouse/storage area of a supermarket.

1. What is LED tube light?
LED tube light is a tubular lighting product which looks very similar as traditional fluorescent tube. It is made to replace the old fluorescent tube as it can save more than 60% on your energy bills than fluorescent tubes and lifespan is 5 times of fluorescent light.


2. What is T5, T8, T10 and T12 when talking about LED tube light?
LED tube light is tubular shaped product, so it has diameter. T5, T8, T10 and T12 standard for the different diameter of the tube light. T5 means 5/8 inch which is 16mm+/-, T8 means 1 inch which is 26mm+/0, T10 means 10/8 inch which is 32mm+/-, T12 means 12/8 inch which is 38mm.
3. What is the difference between T8 and T12 LED tube light?
Basically, they are just different on the diameter. T8 comes in 26mm diameter while T12 comes in 38mm.
4. Are T8 and T12 LED tube light interchangeable?
Both T8 and T13 come in G13 end cap, they can be installed on fixture of each other, so they are interchangeable.
5. What is Type A, B, C and D (A+B) LED tube light?
5.1 Type A LED tube comes with a built-in power supply which it can work directly with existing linear fluorescent ballast. So the installation is very easy for this type of LED tube. But there are shortcomings of this operation:
- lifespan of the light fixture is decided not only the tube light but also the ballast which will cause extra maintenance costs.
- Ballast compatibility, not all ballasts can work with the LED tube light, compatibility must be checked before use.
- There is additional power waste on the existing ballast, something like 5~10w depending on ballast models.
- Type B LED tube also comes with an embedded LED driver but the driver needs to be connected to the AC main directly, bypassing the ballast. This solution doesn’t have the problem of compatibility and extra power waste. But it needs extra wiring work when installation due to the bypassing.
- Type C LED tube comes with external LED driver, AC main is connected to LED driver, then LED driver output DC voltage & current to LED tubelight. This type has the best energy performance and lowest maintenance cost. Only issue is still the re-wiring work during retrofit.
- Type D is also known as Type A+B which means the combination of Type A and Type B. So, it can work with both the AC mains and the existing ballast as well. This combination provides the users free choices when replace the old fluorescent tubes.
6. What is plug and play LED tube light?
Plug and play LED tube light is Type A tube light, which means people can take out the classic fluorescent tube and put the new LED tubelight into the existing fixture directly, no rewire work is needed. Provide the fast replacement for old fluorescent lights.
7. What are ballast bypass LED tube light?
Ballast bypass is Type B LED tube light, which means when people try to replace the fluorescent tubes, they need to bypass the existing ballast in the fluorescent fixture.
8. What is ballast compatible LED tube light?
Ballast compatible LED tube light means the lighting tube can work with existing ballast in lighting fixture, no additional rewiring work. So it’s also called Type A or plug and play LED tubelight.
9. What is inside LED tube light?
LED tube light is composed of aluminum PCB board, LED light source, PC cover, lamp holder or also called end cap, LED driver, insulation sleeve and screws.

10. What are the key components in LED tube light?
LED driver is the core of LED tube light, the quality of LED driver decides the lifespan of the LED tubelight. LED light source is another key component for LED tube light, the quality of light source decides the quality of output light and the lifespan, anyway, any single one or few small LED dots failure won’t let the light complete off, but some dark area may show up.
11. What are power supply / driver for LED tube light?
LED power supply, called as LED driver as well, is an adapter which converts AC main voltage to DC voltage & current and supply to LED board. Because LED only works in DC voltage. So the LED power supply the key factor of LED tube light quality. LED driver normally output constant current as it benefits the LED lifespan the most.
12. What are isolated and non-isolated LED tube light driver?
Isolated LED tube lights use a transformer that transforms the AC voltage into lower voltage and converts it into DC.
The primary coil withstands the high AC voltage whereas the secondary voltage does not.
The driver Is called isolated because there is no connection between the two coils.
Isolated light emitting diode tube lights are safer to use as compared to non-isolated tube lights.

In contrast, the non-isolated drivers are different because the high voltage is directly connected to the circuits,
The electronic components of the circuit then lower the voltage.
It is called non-isolated because the input is linked to the output through these components.
These drivers have high efficiency and have a low cost.
13. What is flicker free regarding LED tube light?
LED lights often flicker due to certain reasons. This means that the brightness of the light fluctuates frequently when it is on. It can occur many times even in a second.
Flickering is defined in terms of percent flicker. LED lights with 0% flicker are called flicker-free LED lights. These lights have minimum fluctuations in brightness.
Flickering can be invisible to the common eye but it has some adverse effects. The flickering of lights can have slow but serious health issues.
Frequent flickering can harm the neurological system of the body leading to eye strain, headache, and fatigue.
You should also be careful while buying lights if you need them for shooting videos. Even if the flicker is invisible to you, it can appear in the video or pictures.
14. What are ‘single ended’ and ‘double ended’ regarding LED tube light?
Light emitting diode tube lights have live and neutral pins. There are two kinds of LED tube lights based on the position of the two pins.
Single-ended LED tubelights have both pins on one side of the tube. The end containing the pins is known as the input end.
If you install the single-ended light emitting diode tube light into a fluorescent tube fixture, make sure you replace the shunted holder with the non-shunted holder.
Single-ended LED tube lights do not need a ballast to work. These lights are easier to install.
Single-ended LED tube lightThe other kind is a double-ended LED tube light. These LED tubelights have the two types of pins on the opposite sides of the tube and are not polarized.
You can pick any side for the live or neutral pin, and electricity flows through both sides.
These lights can fit easily into the fluorescent tube light fixtures.
Double-ended LED lights use the shunted holders in this way, there is no voltage difference between the two pins. They can also use the un-shunted holders.

15. Which led tube light is better single ended or double ended?
The choice of single-ended or double-ended tube lights is based on the availability of the type of fixture.
The fixture can be shunted or non-shunted. The LED tube light is selected while considering the sockets of the available fixture.
If the available fixture has shunted sockets than single-ended LED tube lights are not a good choice. This is because there will be a short circuit.
So, if you need a single-ended LED tubelight you will either rewire the socket or replace it with a non-shunted one.
Single-ended light emitting diode tubes are easier to install. It does not require a ballast and has a lower number of failure points.
These tube lights do not need unnecessary equipment and consume less energy.
In case you have a double-ended LED tube light, it will work with both the shunted and non-shunted socket.
An advantage of double-ended LED is that if you need to upgrade your lighting from fluorescent to LED tubes you can utilize the already available holders.
This reduces the extra cost of replacement of holders.
16. What is G5, G13, 2G11, FA8 and R17D when talking about LED tube light?
G5, G13, 2G11, FA8, and R17D are the different types of sockets for LED tube lights.
G5 socket has a distance of 5mm from pin to pin whereas there is a distance of 13mm from pin to pin in G13.

FA8 is used as single pin socket and R17D is also referred to as a two-pin socket.

17. What is LED starter for LED tube light?
The LED starter is an electrical connector that has a safety fuse. If the LED light is installed in a fluorescent tube fitting, the starter helps to complete the circuit.
LED starters cannot be used for fluorescent light tubes. Those tube lights have pre-heat starters which cannot be used for LED lights.
So, to protect the LED tube light from overload, the fluorescent starter is changed with an LED starter when the tubes are replaced.

18. Does LED tube light need a ballast?
No, LED tubes do not necessarily require a ballast. Ballast is required by a fluorescent tube light and is present in the fixture.
The ballast works by regulating the current. It provides the proper amount of energy to the lights.

It is not present in LED tube lights because these lights do require low energy, as compared to fluorescent lights, and they do not need the ballast for energy regulation.
Instead of ballast, the light emitting diode tube lights have a driver. The driver regulates the amount of electricity in the fixture.
But some LED tubes are compatible with ballast and in that case the ballast does not have to be removed.
19. What is brightness of LED tube light?
The brightness of LED lights is based on the number of photons released when the electrons fill holes.
LED tube lights of varying brightness scales are available in the market. LED lights are very bright and can produce clean light over a large area.
This depends on the tubes and the fittings that are used.
Light emitting diode tube lights can generate very bright light on lower wattages as compared to the fluorescent tube lights.
20. What is price / cost of LED tube light?
LED tube lights used to have a very high cost as compared to fluorescent lights. This has changed now and LED light costs have been lowered to compete with fluorescent lights.
Apart from the tube light, there is an additional cost of installation. If you want to remove the fluorescent tube lights and install LED lights on a bigger scale then it might cost you more.
The installation cost depends on how must the electrician charges and how complex is the wiring replacement process.
But still, using LED tubelights is a cost-effective way of lighting because there is very low electricity consumption.
21. How to make LED tube light?
You can make the light emitting diode tube light yourself by using the material of your choice. You can make the LED tube in any required length.
You can buy the transparent tubes of plastic or any other material, a wooden dowel rod, a DC adaptor, LED strip light, and end caps for the tube.
Apart from this, you will need wires and some tools like a wire cutter and screwdriver.
Cut the dowel rod the same length as the tube and paste the electrical cord on it by leaving some part overhanging.
Then take the LED strip and wrap it around the Dowel rod to cover it completely. Cut it from the end and then solder the extra hanging wire to this cut end of the LED strip.
Screw the other side of the wire with the power adaptor. Now connect to the electrical supply and check if the connections are right.
If the LEDs glow, you can insert the rod inside the transparent tube and screw the caps on both ends.
Be careful while you are handling electronics.
22. How does LED tube light work?
LED tube lights contain many light-emitting diodes (LED). These LEDs are of varying power.
The LEDs across the tube, balance the light and heat.
These diodes are arranged along the strip. This ensures the conversion of AC voltage to DC.

The LED tubes produce less heat as compared to the fluorescent lights because their operating temperature is low.
LED tubes generate light in a particular direction. The light beam can be focused in a direction.
These lights produce brighter light by consuming less electricity as compared to other lights.
LED tubes have a low chance of breaking because they are made of aluminum or plastic.
23. How to repair LED tube light?
If your LED tube light does not work when connected, it is better to hire an electrician. But if this is not possible you can repair it yourself.
First you will open the tube cover and see the damaged part. If you notice damage of the resistor you can buy a new resistor and replace the old one.
You will also need to find the electrical component in the circuit that is causing the short circuit.
You can then connect the LED with the electrical supply and the light will start glowing.
24. How to install LED tube lights?
If you want to replace the old fluorescent tube light with an LED tube light follow the steps:
- Remove the fluorescent tube carefully after switching off the power supply.
- Check for the type of ballast. It will either be electric or magnetic (inductive). If the ballast is electric, it can damage the LED light so it should be removed.
- In case of inductive ballast, you can remove the ballast or you can just remove the starter and install the LED tubelight. It will not be damaged.
- Connect all the wires and LED tube carefully. Make sure to join the live and neutral pins on opposite ends for double ended tubes and the same side for single ended tubes.
- If all the wires have been connected, connect the fixture to the electric supply.
- Dispose of the fluorescent tube lights with great caution because they contain mercury.
